    Default The writing on rods...

Ok, I picked up one of my rods this morning and was staring at the written information you know " 9'0" 5weight" and so on.
And now i'm wondering....How do they put the writing on the rods????
I mean I know you can write it on....But theres nooo way that they write that soo perfectly on every rod is there?
Must be some sort of machine?
    I have no clue...

    Chris,
I was at my local fly shop a few weeks ago and saw a DVD that he had on his table for sale. It was called Wilson Waters with narration by Charles Kuralt. since I like to hear Kuralt and I knew he was a fly fisherman I was interested. It is the story of the R.L. Wilson fly rod company and it covers their boo as well as their graphite rods. It does show one lady who it seems has many other jobs, but it is also her job to do the writing on the rods. She says it is the most fulfilling part of her day to be alone with the rods in peace and quiet and to then record the vital information on the rod. The movie then shows her dipping a pen in a bottle of ink and very carefully, with perfect hand writing it down. It's almost like a religious moment.

Custom rod builders still use pen and ink, though.

True, but most blanks come with a decal too. Sometimes the custom guys do not use them.

Leroy lettering set with fixture to hold rod and template.
Not an easy learning curve but many of we bamboo makers use one form or another to get the perfect, uniform letters.

I never used the leroy sets. I always lettered the hard way, and had the big callus on the side of my finger to prove it!. After nearly 20 years of ACAD and other programs, I don't have the bump anymore, but I also can't letter worth a darn anymore! Maybe the bump was good for something, after all!

A few years ago that young lady, Leah, signed a cap for me when visiting the factory.
Sometimes it's the little things that count.
