Thread: October Hatches in Pennsylvania

  1. #1

    Default October Hatches in Pennsylvania

Planning a visit to Pennsylvania in mid-October for some small stream fishing. Wondering whats happening there hatch-wise, or what some of you use as searching patterns.
    Thanks!

It really depends on what part of PA you are going to.

I can tell you that terrestials will still work everywhere.

BWO's and midges will also be a good choice.

Tricos will possibly still be hatching in the the Lehigh Valley which is in the eastern part of the state.

If you tell us where in PA you are planning to visit; I can be more specific but in October; I don't expect any hatches where I fish so I just try terrestrials and midges more than anything else. I also can make a few stream recommendations.

Hey Bam~thanks for the info. Have yet to nail it down, but think its in the NE part of the state near Bellefonte. We're coming in from the NE, so we'll be working streams only about as far as BF, and those on the way. Any tips, here or via PM would be very helpful.
    Cheers,

Here is an excellent site that will give you very detailed hatch charts on some of our best waters.

I'll second that! If you are in their area be certain to stop in and see them. You won't be disappointed.

This is another good site for stream conditions and hatches in SE and Central PA: http://www.tcoflyfishing.com/1sc_home.cfm. If you get as far down as Reading, try fishing the Tulpehocken, the premier stream in SE PA. Lots of fish and a strong Trico hatch that lasted until November last year (it was unseasonably warm until December). An olive midge pupa in a size 18 seems to work year round.

Thanks for the tips guys...looks like this trip will be happening now, due in part to the expertise I'm getting here! Need to pull out the PA Atlas/Gazateer and look up some of these streams. As its a friend planning this trip (has spent more time in PA than I have) I'm kind of trusting the water he is suggesting. If there is any water you think we shouldn't miss NW of Bellefonte, please don't hesitate to let me know. (here, or via PM) Access points would be helpful too, as I've been within 500 yards of good water..and missed it!

    Thanks again
