I don't build rods, but I have one in need of repair. It's not a "high dollar" rod but it's one my aunt gave me and I really want to keep it in good shape. The guides that are on it now are single-footed,ceramic ring type, I prefer snake guides and wondered if changing the style/type would have any adverse affect on the preformance of the rod. Also, the current/original guides were not thread-wrapped, but they're attached with a wrap of composite tape and epoxy overlay. These tapes are brittle and cracking and one of the guides has recently lost its ceramic ring. Re-gluing is possible, but I really prefer the snake guides.
