Great thread. I like the once that make me think or do research or recall something that I have read about.

Hooks are made by or for innovative people to cover a need or a want. Dave Witlock when tying his Sheep?s Minnow will bend or customize a streamer hook back or up to help in his hook ability.

My educated guess for a vertical eye would have to be the need or a want of the designer of the hook / fly trying to imitate a more natural movement of a young trout or bait fish. Trout as many of us know to conserve energy will rise or sink to feed, side to side in a current uses too much energy. A vertical eye would help produce a more natural up and down movement with the aid of a hoop knot as apposed to a horizontal eye with any kind of knot.

Clever people these anglers, a preference? No. An edge to catch a fish? What do you think?
