Default Knot for a dropper fly

    Hi group,

I can imagine that there are going to be several answers to this one.

What kind of knot do you use to tie on a dropper fly off of your floater?

I imagine that most of you use a clinch knot or maybe a uni-knot - but would love to know if there is a simpler/easier/faster way that you're doing it?

I use a slipknot over a slipknot over a slipknot then loop that onto the hook - faster that a clinch knot but I have no idea about the breaking strength.

    Thanks!

    Jim

Check out Knot #6, the Water Knot, at this site. It's very much like a Double Surgeon.

If I attach the fly to the bend it is a Clinch, but I use the Surgeon's loop to tie all flies on to tippet. MORE MOVEMENT

I'm now a total convert to a surgeon's knot for attaching the first fly...move movement and easier too!

I use a two loop overhand knot or a clinch knot or an orvis knot for tying off on the hook bend.

The clinch knot is the weakest but the quickest.

The orvis knot is the strongest but takes longer to tie.

If I am tying a dropper off the eye of the floating fly I use the Clinck knot or the orvis knot.

I mostly use the uni knot.
I can tie it with my eyes closed and very quickly. It is also very strong, can't beat that.

but sometimes I use a improved clinch.

Barrel knot. Main fly from the straight end, dropper from a long end I leave from one of the barrel knot ends.

Oh....I get it - so you don't tie the dropper off the hook of the dry fly - but off the long tag of the barrel know...never thought of that!

I have nevr tried the barrel knot either.
Like I said I have come off the bend, but the majority of the time I do also come off the eye. You get more chances of fish taking BOTH flies.
Mostly, I tie a long piece of tippet to my leader using a SURGEONS KNOT (two wraps) and leave the tag around 4" to 6" and tie the first fly on that, the dropper on the long end.
Or, I will put a long piece of tippet on a short leader. Slide the first fly up to about a foot or more from the connection and make a Surgeon's Loop and attach that fly. the end one on the end with a surgeon's loop. Both flies can move. Plus when stripping I think they act more natural, then one with the weight of a fly on the bend of the hook.

Hey Goddess - I love both ideas - they sound exceptionally easy and FAST...the most important thing when trying to match exactly what the fish are snacking on at that moment...

    Thanks for the idea!
