Thread: moon phases or solunar tables

Default moon phases or solunar tables

Last week I went to one of my best private ponds and did not get a strike ffing. My brother also went that same day in another part of the state and nada. While in Jackson, MS talking to some members of a fly tying and fishing club one of the members was telling me that the day I went was a poor day according to the moon phases. I go when I have the time and feel like it. Do any of you fish using the moon phases or what, if anything, rather than availablitiy, gives you reason to go ffing? mathcarver

That's the second time you said that...

You can always find them on the net...

Oh, and as an aside ...I wish you would use the first person ...I... you deserve it....

I don't use them. I go by the sign that I have time to go out fishing.
The tables may be true for large bodies of water, but I am not sure they change anything on small ponds.

I tend to agree with Rick. I also think this holds true when fishing small to medium size rivers. However, I think the top water bite is better during a new moon than a full moon.

The best time to go fishing is...........when you have the time to go fishing. It's that simple. Maybe the tables will help with catching, but they do not help with fishing.

I write for a living (business type, not novels or anything) and I'm a little confused as well. Chris's post here does use first person. (I fish using them...

Wait, just kidding, now I get it (I hope). You are trying to show that the tables and moon phases are irrelevant and the fact the they have never let him down, is really just a result of good presentation with the right flies. Right? That does make sense. Chris, DM's trying to convince you that they don't work and you should take credit for catching fish, not give credit to a theory.

Most of us don't have the "luxury" to schedule our fishing around solar/lunar tables, so we fish when we can. That being said, I do believe they work if you get the data for your location (not generalized data from the back of a magazine). Here is a link to what I use:

    http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/RS_OneDay.html

Max periods occur at Transit times (6 hrs after moonrise or moonset). I usually just check it to see if I am going to be on the water during one of the max times. If so - great, if not - oh well..I still go fishing.

If the max time occurs near the time of sunrise or sunset, that is when I know I shouldn't miss fishing that day.

PS: I checked...they have the data for Summit.
