So my buddy and I were talking, and he was asking me about fly tying, and what different materials where used. When I mentioned muskrat, his eyes lit up and he said, " I've got at least 10 pelts on stretchers, do you want them"? It appears his uncle is a trapper, but just for the meat. Yes, the man loves muskrat meat. He saves the pelts for a few trapper friends, but the pelts are so cheap right now nobody wants them. Who am I to say no? I did limit myself to one or two, as I have not the slightest idea how to process them. Anybody got any tips? Or could point me in the right direction for literature or web sites on the subject? In my short fly tyting career, I have yet to tie a pattern that calls for muskrat, but I guess I will now. I have read that it makes excellent dubbing, and that it has a high floatation factor.
