"No Hit" Mcginty aka the Nolan Ryan

I'm thinking of re-naming the Mcginty's in my box to the "Nolan Ryan". After seeing posts about them I bought some and I have fished them several times, when everthing else was "working" and when everthing else wasn't "working", and just like Nolan Ryan they have been my no hit wonders.

At some of these times I have caught fish on Black GRHEN, and other flies, nothing...not even a peck on the Mcginty.

My question are this:
1) is it just where I live and the murky water?
or 2) am I fishing it wrong(using short slow stips)?
or 3) are there other tips that I am just missing.

I know there has to be (unlike me) some good fishermen out ther with some tips.

i usually have them hit it while its sinking. are you fishing the bottom or subsurface? you might want to try both. bee patterns on top are good too

the mcginty is a wierd pattern for me
i can have an awesome ww day with it and its the only fly they will hit
and then other days its like it just shuts offf and they will just ignore the fly and be all over some other pattern.
i wouldnt worry about it and try it again another day lol

I have had more luck with this pattern from about mid summer on.
I think the bees might have to out for the fish to key in on this.
That is why you need to have several favorite flies to go to.

Well if its your Nolan Ryan then its my Barry Bonds.

I can only tell you what I do for it to work for me. It may be other factors why the bream aren't biting it. It does not work for me all the time but it seems to most of the time no matter what time of year because I would guess that it is suggestive of many insect forms. Water clarity may indeed be a reason but there may be other reasons also for your geographical location like time of year for the above mentioned insect forms. I usually let the fly drop for a long time and then retrieve it by creeping it back to me but I may need to vary the retrieve faster or slower, stop and start, or impart other types of action to the fly. The fish usually bite it on the drop but many times also on the retrieve. Best of luck.

Just a thought...Your fish may not care for the color combination of the fly you have. Just because the originator tied it in the color that it is, does not mean you have to use that particular color combination. It is a fly pattern and you can change the colors anyway you want and may just fine a color combination that your fish cannot resist.

If you tie your own flies, it may be something you want to try.

Since I do tie my own flies, I am always experimenting with different color combinations to see if one color works better than another for me in my local waters. The fish are hitting the pattern but they are also hitting the color of that particular pattern.

Just thoughts on your question.
