When a one weight is just too much

Recently I obtained a zero weight fly rod. The story behind that is a bit involved because I also enjoy slinging lead core shooting line at big stripers on Texoma and tussling with magnum hybrids when the opportunity arises.

So let's say that the other end of the spectrum also appeals. My friend Don (zenkoanhead) has built a few of these gems. After fishing one a few times I have become addicted! I can pop by the park and fish for smallest sunfish and have a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The fight in a 3" sunfish is given proper and ample illumination when the fight is on fair ground.

Looks like a nice rod. What kind of reel, line and leader setup are you using for it?

Hi Greg

Right now I am using a Bass Pro Classic Ultralight with an Orvis one weight line. It likes the slight overlining and I have not yet acquired funds for a zero weight line. I also want a J. AUSTIN FORBES AVON 2in. reel which is lighter than the ultralight by several ounces. But for now this set up is performing yeoman service.

The leader is a furled one that I built for the little feller. Furled it out of tying thread, its light and airy, just right to turn over small flies - like the analogy of baby bear's soup, not too big and not too small.

I don't have a zero wt, but I built a 1 wt that is a blast.

IT was a handful on a 5-weight

Actually a 3-wt would have been a blast with that one. I may just venture into the world of the lower weights. Hmmmmm

I fished a stock tank with a three weight last spring, the fight I got out of those bass was incredible! The more I fish with small stuff the more I shun my larger gear (excepting obvious stuff like Texoma stripers and such)

Big Bad, RW here

I've caught 3 lb. and 4 lb. smallies on my 1-weight. It was no sweat! So I doubt if that sunfish would give me any trouble. In fact where I've recently moved there are some nice bluegill ponds around and they are the next to fall victims to my little 7-footer.

My 1-weight is rigged with a Hardy fly-weight and when I bought it four years ago it was a reasonable price for a high-end reel. I notice that Hardy just recently raised their retail price on that reel to $485, more than double what I paid for mine. I think the fly fishing industry is going nuts.
