    Default Crappie............on a popper?

I was fishing a pond last night and catching bream and crappie. It turned dark and they quit hitting so I decided to try a popper to lure out some bass. Well the darned crappie started hitting it.
I just never heard of crappie doing that. It was fun!
I guess it being a pond they act different than lake crappie? Or do lake crappie hit poppers too?
Good fishing technique trumps all.....wish I had it.

I thnik the reason they hit poppers in ponds is the competion for food. After dark they are up higher in the water column and will take any food they can get.

And yes I think it is the competition thing. In one spot I can catch bream, crappie and bass on every other cast. I also think I got into a carp because I hooked it and it instanty shot straight ahead, snapping the woolley bugger off my line.

I've had a lot of fun catching them on about everything from poppers and deerhair diver's and slider's to nymph's and scud's,Dry flies...even diver's up to size 4 have produced well at times..Usually my best fish come on Dark Cahill wet's...This is deffinetly my all time favorite wet fly..that and an adam's dry and I think a man could never starve if left in the wild's till his end...Toss in the gold ribed hare's ear nymph and i'll personally garentee it!!..
    Wish ya great fishing,Bill

Just about two weeks ago, I was catching Bass (small) and Crappie on a deer hair popper I had made. They were just tearin it up... about 5 in the evening. Now, I can only get an occasional Bass.... darn fish.

I have caught lake specs on a popper, but they never had any size to them.

I'm new here in the south and have been experimenting on Bream and LMB with every fly I've got. It seems that large bream will take the poppers and very agressively when the LMB won't. But the eye opening thing is that these fish will take just about every dry fly I have for trout and even steelhead streamers!.. I used one yesterday morning (steelhead streamer pattern) my old fishing buddy gave me and caught LMB after another. Big surprises! I also think the spring season has been a good one with me pulling in 30-40 fish days of large bream(9-10") and 10-12"LMB. I saw a bruiser yesterday swing by the bank but I was just stalking. Now the next goal is to start on the big daddies. I'm thinking from a boat( I live on a small lake) with some deep and large lures eh?? With the weather warming up the fishing is slowing down a lot so I'm looking into some speckled trout and redfish to substitute.
