wrapping female ferrules

Decided to try my hand at building a graphite rod but although have wrapped several boo's have never had to wrap a female ferrule as is done on graphite. Does anyone have a good discription of the proceedure? or know were I may find it maybe one with pics of how it is done

You just need to wrap the female portion of the ferrule like you were putting on a guide. Get the thread as close to the end as you can. Rule of thumb is the wrap should be 2 times the diameter of the ferrule, but you should check with the manufacturer to see if they have requirement to keep the warranty valid. There is one manufacturer who doesn't require ferrule wraps, but I like to see them just to be safe.

Be careful that you don't wrap too tightly , or you might not get the male fully engaged .

I tie my female ferrules while engaged with the male section. I'm not sure that you can tie the wraps so tight as to compress the tube. I've not heard of that happening.

Yep, it has been known to happen. Snug, but not tight, kind of like the guides. I recall one guy who wrapped like you do with the ferrule assembled, and ended up cutting off the wrap to get the rod back apart. It might not be as much of an issue with the new generation rods/ferrules, but it is something to be check before the finish goes on. Better safe than sorry.

Joe, it sure can happen, voice of experience addressing that one, lol. I always wrap with the sections mated, makes it much easier to wrap the ferrules that way, but I only use enough tension to keep the thread in place and to snug the tags. Too, I have heard of people wrapping graphite or fiberglass so tight that it compressed the blank to the point that it broke, haven't done that one but know a couple of folks that have.

Some manufacturers don't even require wrapping of the ferrules on their blanks but I always do as that is a very high stress point.
