Well, how about a surprising one? About a dozen or so years ago, I was fishing the beautiful AuSable River in Michigan, a little way below Mio Dam. It was a cool and drizzly evening, and the trout would have none of this fly stuff. Then I got a take on a nymph. When I brought the fish to hand, my buds were astounded to see it was a grayling- a fish that had been "extinct" in Michigan since late in the 19th century! How could that be? Not my time-travel machine... I hadn't yet perfected it at that time. As it turned out, there had been an attempt to re-introduce grayling into the AuSable, and I caught one of the stockers. They didn't last long there, but it sure was a surprise!
