Thread: Fishing guides and location in Hokkaido Japan?

Default Fishing guides and location in Hokkaido Japan?

    Hi,

Has anyone fished there for Cherry Salmon and a local Japanese Trout known as Yamame? I'm trying to plan a trip there this Aug but a Google search only turn up mostly Japanese sites. Would appreciate if anyone could advise on good time and location to fish and contacts of local english speaking fly fishing guides in Hokkaido, preferably near to bigger cities in Hokkaido such as SOUNKYO or SAPPORO. Thanks in advance!

    Best Regards

Good luck! I lived up there for 3 years, and I knew of NO english-speaking outfitters/guides. In fact, I'm not sure how that could work. A fishing license in Japan is a lot harder to obtain than a license here. It took several months and quite a bit of money when I lived there in the early 90s.

    Hey fly_caster99,

I have a friend named Tanaka that lives in Japan and he sent me a couple sites to check out when I was considering a trip there. Don't know if they'll help you, but here you go!

In 1980 "Jimmy Cater" visited Japan and fished OSHINO (very popular spring creek in Japan) then he a caught very nice brown that day. It's pretty nice place to fish. Read Vol. 51-54 in The Life as a Fly Fisherman on Ken's sight.

Ken's sight also has a significant amount of English translation on it.

Hope this helps get you started.

    Kindest regards and fish on!

Yeah, I wrote a column a few years back here on FAOL called "Trouts and Seasons of the Mountain Village." It's about a fly-fishing artist in Japan. He speaks Ango-wa. I've corresponded with him some. He MIGHT know where to point you also. There is a link to his site in that article of mine, and you can email him via that website.
