    Default leaders

    Well, I guess I'm in the minority, because i tried a furled leader and really disliked it. It seems to stretch too much for my liking, and when I would get it hung up in thr hydrilla we have down here, when it came loose, it would be a tangled mess. I went back to the tapered mono leaders, they work much better for me. I also used it with a braided loop, and could not seem to keep it afloat when using topwater flies. Just my 2 cents, .... Rob

    Rhen,

    It really depends on what material your braided leaders are made out of.

    If they are made from mono thread, they will be stretchy.

    If you make them from tying thread, they won't stretch as much but they can be a bit tangly.

    If you make them from Spiderwire Braid, they are strong, float, don't stretch, and will pull a 10 pound bass through hydrilla easily (but you may capsize the boat if you aren't careful). Bit of overkill, maybe, but they are 'THE' leader for topwater flies for bass, primarily because of the low stretch (hooksets are better) and the floatation.

    In any event, they aren't all the same. Nothing wrong wit hte tapered mono leaders either. It's all just personal preference, really.

    Good Luck!

    Rob I have had the same experience with the spring back tangle.
    I have been toying with the idea of furled florocarbon but I think I will stick to Monofloro. I tie up my own tapered leaders.

    You can also add one strand of the microbraid of your choice to what ever leader you want to use....thread...nylon....mono..fluorocarbon...if you make your own....it will do away with the stretchy....and make them stronger...also stiffin just a little....

    If you don't make your own I know a source where they can be purchased.

    Duckster,
    What source would I be able to buy a leader like the one you mentioned?

    Just made some from some 6lb test Berkley Fireline. they don't stretch but the jury is still out. I like Stren super braid but haven't found 6lb test.

    Hi Buddy;

    What's the formula and lb test spiderwire braid used for the floating bass bug leader? Also, what length do you make this furled leader. I have a 5 1/2ft, uni-thread furled leader for my 8wt that works ok in open water but I'm looking for something a little more bullet proof for the weedy areas.

    Thanks in advance;

    Wayneb
