    Default Hard foam popper patterns wanted

    Hello folks; I have a project ahead of me to tie some hard foam poppers and am in search of a variety of patterns. A search here on FAOL did not turn up much and I am hoping that some of you folks might kindly pass along some pattern info or other web sites that might help me in my search. Any help would be greatly appreciated for I am planning on tying hard foam pencil poppers in 1" and 1 1/2" lengths.

    David,

    There aren't really any 'patterns'.

    You pick the type of and material for the tails. the variations are endless, and most things will work just fine.

    For the rest of it, it's what you construct the bodies out of, and how you color them.

    Depending on your skill with paint, sprayers, markers, masking mateials, coverings, and such, you can do whatever you want with them.

    No 'wrong' way to do this.

    Good Luck!

    The latest addition of Fly Tyer Magazine has a good article on making poppers.

    If you need a post on finishing the foam go to Fly Archives then to 2nd QTR 2006 "The Jelly Bean" and 1st Qtr 2003 "Creative Foam Tying Dremel Bugs" Jims foam bugs are a work of art------BILL

    Look at the Lefty's Bug ( right here on this site.) SIMPLE to tie, cast better than most, rarely foul and CATCH fish like mad.
    It's my "go to" popper for all species of Bass and WW fish in general. I make mine from balsa and cork and usually use a bucktail tail but that's personal prefference.

    Thanks to all who replied. I have yet to receive my spring copy of Fly Tyer, so I will look forward to seeing what is in it. For now, have been playing with woven mylar tubing over hard foam. Painting the foam different colours with permanent markers has produced some very interesting results once the tubing has been added over the coloured body. Marabou tails and dolls eyes have produced some poppers that the local fish might enjoy munching.

    Hey Lee;
    Now that is what I was hoping to find. I've made some similar, but with marabou tails and dolls eyes. I have found that by painting the foam various colours with a permanent marker it will change the final colour of the pearl mylar tubing and give some interesting results. I like your stick on eyes.......will have to try some of those.
