    Default Royal Family?

I know that the term "royal" usually refers to a Red Abdomen on traditional flies, turning them into some type of attractor patterns.
My question is how far does this go?
If I put some red dubbing on the abdomen of my Hare's Ear is it a Royal Hare's Ear? Royal Sparkle Pupa?
If the theory is that Red is an effective attractant can't I put it onto everything?

That is something I have wondered about too...

But then they say red disappears at 3ft. so does it matter when fishing deeper???

    What's a body to think?????

As long as it is a red band, usually in floss, as far as I can work out.

The Royal flies are very interesting because instead of 'color' variations, it is known for covering the spectrum from Dry to Streamer.
Tail fibers vary, hackle maybe and wing materials.
At least one segment of peacock and royal red body is what they have in common.
    Good Luck!

    Hi Rawfish,

I absolutely love the idea of a Royal Hare's Ear. I think I'll whip up half a dozen to give to friends so I can watch the expression on their faces. Don't forget to put your name on the fly so that you get a commission when Umpqua Feather Merchants picks up your fly----Rawfish's Royal Hare's Ear. 8T

Your biggest problem may be coming up with a name... A Rawyool Rawfish? Royal Sushi?

Along this same subject - anyone ever see a royal pheasant tail? I never could figure that one out, it's a dry pheasant tail with a thorax of kind of cinnamon dubbing - not a piece of red on it. Anybody know the background on it?

    Here's one I found:

I envisioned peacock herl separated by red floss with the ptn tail, legs and case. It doesn't seem to be the case. Others I've seen look more like a royal wulff front with a ptn back.
