Default Have any of you been to Libby Camp in Maine...

I was just thinking about this place today. We went pre-children and had such a great time. You have to take logging roads to even get to it. All of the cabins are hand-built by the owners and have gas lanterns and pot belly stoves - no electricity. The main lodge is wired and they do all the cooking. A typical breakfast is pancakes made with blueberries that they pick that morning. It is so beautiful there. They have guides and a float plane if you want to go all-out. Some in our group brought kids and the owners had babysitters for them. The ice is cut from the lake in winter and stored in hay in the ice shed. It's just great. I highly reccomend it. The fishing was fun but not so hot due to severely low waters. I think it's normally really good. We fished for trout but I think you can also fish salmon by floatplane trip - can't remember. Anyway, just daydreaming......

Hi! I've never been to Libby Camps but I've wanted to go there. Thanks for the tip! I've been to Tim Pond camps in Maine, and it was very beautiful. I do most of my fishing in the Adirondacks, because it's much closer. I have two boys (They're grown now) and seeing your photos brought back memories. Thanks for posting them!

Heaven, I've been to Matt Libby's camp in Maine several times, even took my non-fishing wife once. She loved the cabins and the cooking. Matt and his wife still run the camps with help from Matt's son and his relatively new bride. I can remember when they were both small kids.

Truly a heavenly spot, still reached by dirt road or by Matt's float plane. Plenty of LLSalmon and Brookie fishing either on the main lake or on flyouts.

Matt also has a lodge in Labrador called Riverkeep. If anyone wants exceptional Brookie, Salmon, Pike and Lake Trout fishing that's the place to visit.

We'll be seeing Matt shortly, he's scheduled to visit and speak at the 2005 FlyFishing in Maine Conclave on the West Branch of the Penobscot. Dates are June 17-18 anyone visiting the area is welcome to attend.

Ok, you've convinced me! I'm going to have to go next year. How far in advance do you need to make reservations? Maine is a beautiful state and it's been too long since I've gotten up there.

Only guy I've ever seen who had been to Libby Camps had a fly stuck in his neck?

    Odd coincidence no?

    Have fun

For what it is worth - it is an Orvis endorsed camp. In fact, Matt Libby is in their latest catalog.

I had the privladge of fishing in Maine for almost 2 weeks a few years back. While I didn't get to stay at the camp mentioned I did get to stay at three others and found them all to be top notch with great people at all of them. There seems to be many great places to stay in Maine. And I found the people to be really great. I will list the places that I stayed and a guide that may help someone out if they are in his area.

The first place I stayed was in the Rangeley Area in western Maine. It has great access to the middle dam on the Rapid River. And the Brooktrout like the one on there opening page are there, I caught a 3 1/2 pounder and several great fish while I was there. Good place to stay and great people. http://www.lakewoodcamps.com/default.htm[/url:6de16]

The second place that I stayed was up on Moosehead Lake. There are several areas to fish up there and all will produce great fishing. I stayed at Casey's on Moosehead Lake Great spot. We drove to fishing while we were there. We took some nice fish from the streams up there and the lake is just beautiful. The other place I stayed for a few days was even further north. It was up on Munsungan Lake at the Munsungan Hunting and Fishing Club. This is also a great place on the outlet of the lake. They have a stream right in front of the lodge and the lake is also there in front. While we were there it was 90 degrees and the lake was dead flat but we still caught some LL salmon and I am sure had the weather been better we would have done very well. Great food to. Apple pie to die for LOL.http://www.munsungan.com/[/url:6de16]

Those are the three places that I stayed and fished while I was there and I can say that all were top notch and the people were great. If you look on a map of Maine you will see that I took in just about the whole state in one trip as I started from Bangor and Deer Isle and ended there. If anyone is going to be in the Deer Isle area and should want to fish or hunt just contact Dave Cassidy and I am sure he will do all he can to make sure you have a great time or give you good information for his area of the state.

Here is a web-site that anyone going to Maine can find great information and get your questions answered by other fly fishermen in the state of Maine. http://www.flyfishinginmaine.com/[/url:6de16]

I have to say that Maine is a beautiful state with great people, fishing and food. I would love to return someday and see even more of that great state. But I have pictures of it to help me remember and I will include one here for you folks. This is of Moosehead Lake taken from in front of the cabin we stayed in. Sunset on Moosehead Lake. Ron

i've been there, but it was back in the spin fishing times. i caught about 7 brookies in a pond and then one or two more on the lake. wasn't the best fishing of my life, but it was still fun. one thing that i must say is that the food was unreal, especially the blueberry pancakes and the butternut squash.

I spent a week at Libby's last July. I can't say enough good things about the Camp. Matt Libby, the owner, is a class act. The main lodge and cabins can't be beat. The food is delicious. Everyone mentions breakfast (which is great), but the lunches they pack for your day long trips are equally great, and dinner is better then most resorts. Fishing is great. Brook trout are everywhere -- lakes (big and small), streams, brooks and tibutaries leading into the lakes. You can also catch land locked salmon, and splake (a cross between lake trout and brook trout bred and stocked by the State -- don't ask or bother). The float planes will get you to waters not otherwise accesible by 99% of mankind. The on-site store/shop is well stocked. The best part, however, are the guides. Mike Langley is one of the best. Great attitude, loves to fish, an amazingly long and delicate cast and knows more "secret" fishing holes then anyone I know. One day I fished a stream, lake and tributary, with Mike, and caught no less than 75 brook trout. My largest for the week was an 18.5" brook trout, taken on a hornberg, in a small but very deep lake.

Be prepared to see more Moose than humans, and the occasional black bear and white tail deer.

Next time I will return in September, before bear season.
