Is anyone familiar with Tom White as a fly caster and casting instructor?

    Good,

He's not in the NW anymore is he?

I actually took a clinic from him years ago.

I bring him up because I am going over some of his video stuff from back then and IMHO it is really, really good stuff and thought I would bring it to folks attention.

To me he and Joan Wulff seem similar in many ways...but I think I prefer his tapes.

I also have looked at Lefty's from years ago and the style seems different enough it raises some questions for me.

Even though i'm pretty new to fly fishing. I've studied pretty hard. What i've come to realize is if you have a good feel for what the line is doing. You can use many different ways to cast it.

I have to keep going back to the golf swing. Look at all the different golf swings on the Pro Tour. Many different ways to get the club head on the ball. All the ball cares about is what if feels as it's hit. It doesn't care how the club head got there. The fly line is the same thing. All it cares about is what the rod tip is doing at release.

Tom moved from the NW a few years ago, was in Florida for a while. I last hear he was managing a fishing resort in Mexico or Belize. Fine caster and instructor.

Do I ever wish I could.

I haven't seen a lot of you pros cast but I think Tom represents the art of casting as you describe in this weeks column.
The segment in his video where he and his wife are demonstrating the double haul showed a real difference between the two.... he was so effortless...and I wouldn't complain one bit if I could cast like her.

Why do you say that? Is Tom a better caster than Lefty?
