JC's Fish to Kill ?

Having read this weeks article by JC , firstly I must ask the question was this inspired by the comments on the board about LF's article last week ?
Secondly re need to fish, there was a psycologist who theorised that dispite most of use having no need to fish or hunt for food that it satisfys our hunter/gatherer instincts.
Personally I find fishing a great way to relax and escape the rush of every day life.

Dispite the above comments still dont realy understand what JC is trying to say....can anyone help.

Monday ritual as I open the office before the public finds me here is to open FAOl and read my favorite columns, make some strong coffee (no flavors), and get my week off to a good start. Please post new articles on Friday. Monday is not the day I want for introspection, and self evaluation. Don't tell me not to read them until later in the week because I coudn't potpone them if I had to. Thank you for being an oasis of civility, thought, and education for and old poop in Wisconsin.

For me...ever the hunter/angler...part of the joy of fishing (and hunting) is the satisfaction that comes from knowing I have provided my own meal with acquired skill and harvested from nature's bounty. I C&R far more often than I harvest fish, but every once in awhile it is important for me to fill a stringer and take home fish for my wife, myself, and perhaps friends to enjoy. The experience is rejuvenating in it's own way...on some spiritual or psychic level.

I think JC was just trying to make his readers think about this aspect of fishing a little bit...without passing judgment himself.

Knowing you as I do (from posts and photos) I think you might fish even if there was no family. Fishing with family just increases exponentially the joy of it all.

For me I fish because it puts me in places, both physical and mental that I truly enjoy. I fish alone and enjoy the solitude. I fish while my wife is birding and we share the outdoors and solitude, so often just pointing at things that are of interest or beauty. I fish with my children and we share all of the above plus the adventure of the fishing itself.

I rarely keep fish, not a a matter of principle, but just because it does not enhance my experience. My joy comes from seeing them come to the net or to my hand. I think that I would even fish if I knew that there were no fish to catch or no hook at the end of the line. It sounds strange, but the experience of being there and doing something as close to perfection as you can is enough for me. The fish part is extra.

Catch and release is both the best and the worst thing that has ever happened to fly fishing. It's great for the resource but it lets the fisherman off the hook as well as the fish.

Oh it's there JC, I think we see this one together.

I also hope to give you hope that all is not lost on the younger folk. I'm certainly not as old as dirt but more like compost and I made sure that the first fish my daughter caught (on a fly) were eaten and delighted in. And when we fish where the regulations permit harvest we discuss whether or not to keep some fish. Sometimes we conclude the regs are too lenient and sometimes not. I might also note that one time after some very fresh stockers were cooked up she swore off planted fish "yesch". Fortunately we rarely have occasion to fish stocked waters. I'm also sure Vincent Chin will continue to grow knowing full well what fishing is all about.

He sure is, ...

Winding down the season last year, I asked him if he wanted to stay home or go out again for another 2 day stay on the river.

It took him all of about 2 seconds to decide.


even with a cold front rolling in, Vince bagged a nice Blue on the third cast

After that one fish, he took a nap on the beach and the wandered around the forest a while.
I asked him if he was bored.
He replied No.
"Why don't you keep fishing then"?
Reply, ... well, I'll only eat ONE, ... why catch more?
