Fly fishing in the Shenandoah Mountains, VA?

Hey Everybody!

I am new to this site and Extremely new to Fly Fishing.
I live in Northern VA and I just received a Fly Rod for Christmas as I had asked. Knowing there are all kinds of great places to fish on those mountains I was wondering if there is anyone on this site that is local and know's some good spots or someone that has been up in Shenandoah and might be able to give me some advice on what streams were best.

I haven't fished up there in quite a while, but I can still think of some really good streams. The Rose and the Rapidan are fun to fish (at least I think so). I like the Hughes for smaller stream fishing. I recommend picking up Trout Streams of Virginia. I bought it and it made a world of difference in where I fished and how to get there. Good luck.

What size rod did you get? That may be a better indicator (assuming its your only rod) of the appropriate body of water to employ it on. I base my limited opportunity to get out that way on the drive, the size of water Im in the mood to fish, water levels, and the weather. So its hard to say you should hit this river or that as there are plenty of good ones to be had. Drop me a PM for more, Id be happy to tell you what (little) I know.

Depending on where you live, there are many options. Passage Creek is pretty close and does have a population of hold over wild trout. It's just west of Front Royal. There's also some good fly fishing for smallmouth on the Shenandoah.

I have to echo what was said above about Harry Murray. He also has a book on Blue Ribbon Streams of Virginia and one on fishing the Shenandoah National Park.
