Thread: FYI (yarn I use for Crappie Candy flies)

Default FYI (yarn I use for Crappie Candy flies)

rodgerole was looking for fluorescent yarn sources for the Crappie Candy fly in the chat room last night so I gave him the sites for the yarn I use. I use the Needloft brand of nylon plastic canvas yarns for the Crappie Candy fly for the fluorescent green and yellow chartreuse colors (actual brand name colors I use for these are below). Links below.

I can usually find some of these at craft stores or other craft departments of department stores so I don't have to place an order.

You can get the Needleloft 10 yard hanks at Wal-Mart for 25 cents.

Just a note, I've seen some of this made with acrylic which are finer strands but not as shiny as the nylon (which I prefer).

A little bit dubbed makes great durable bodies/legs on nymphs.

Just another note....I use alot of this stuff to make my own dubbing ....mixes or straight...

    Hi JMoody,

Here in SC I have been tying my crappie candies on
Mustad #8 Aberdeens for years. No complaints what so
ever, common hook found at Wallyworld and many bait
shops, and usually cheaper than other models. Warm
    regards, Jim

    Default CC hooks

Since Al suggests using any straight eye streamer type hook, that's what I try to use. I tie most of mine on a standard generic size 8 straight eye hook, but sometimes on a Mustad 9672 nymph/streamer hook. I have also tied them like Jim on #6 and #8 Aberdeens.

What difference does a straight hook eye vs a standard streamer hook? Reason I ask is I want to tie some of these flies.

Mostly personal preference as far as I'm concerned. I think some folks might believe that the down turned eye helps in hooking ability more but since I catch fish with both kinds, it doesn't really matter to me.
