Early on we noticed that the word "haul" made some think they needed to really pull hard and long on the line. The word often used in teaching back then was a 'little tug'. Often this was only a few inches, two or three at the most. It is easier to learn that way for many and that of course is what we were involved with, teaching. There was an old logo for Hastings Piston Rings which showed a big strong, but 'oh so gentle' guy. We used that idea in teaching; firm but gentle. There are way too many folks who claim that their way is the only way to DH, and then there the ones who really can teach and let everyone develop their own style. There are times when not only is it desirable to load the rod but to increase line speed, then the long pull is very useful. Even a third little shot at the very end of the presentation can help sometimes to open a dying loop.
