And in MY opinion: Scenario- I'm in fast water slightly above my knees and suddenly a current vortex excavates my gravel foothold and all of a sudden the current becomes a FACTOR and I feel I'm losing my footing and am in a bit of trouble. I have two options. The "easier" option seems be edging downstream at a safe angle toward the bank. The other option is a bit more difficult. Proceed at also a safe angle to the bank but upstream. My choice and logic are: I do the more difficult option FIRST and if THAT doesn't work, I still have the easier option available as opposed to the reverse.
Of course there are circumstances where this logic may not apply such as depth of water or current in the direction of the chosen option.

PS: I had to add: NOW WHAT LOGIC GOT YA INTO THIS SITUATION IN THE FIRST PLACE?

I'd rather be in Wyoming!
