the pattern calls for a Kamasan sedge hook #14. is that basically the same as a sz. 14 scud hook

From what I've found, Kamasan is the European trade name for Daiichi. The Daiichi equivalent of the Kamasan B420 is the 1140, but it is only available in size 18-20. The best Tiemco substitute would be the 206BL (black hook would look sharp on that fly, too).
A Tiemco 2488 would be a good substitute as well......Ed
