Toby Taylor of Garibaldi, Ore., and his friend John Tammen of West Linn took their traditional flyfishing trip to Costa Rica earlier this year-only to have it interrupted by a black marlin weighing 793 pounds. Typically, the pair, and the boat's crew, tease sailfish close by with a hookless bait, then cast flies for catch and release fishing. This time, Tammen said, they spotted a school of yellow-fin tuna and dropped some live bait on 50 pound line. The black marlin beat the tuna to the bait, then took three hours to land. Tammen said it's the first marlin that has died on the pair in eight years of catch and release fishing bill fishing. The marlin was donated to a hospital in Costa Rica.
