I paddle whitewater all year long and can pass on a few tips:
- dress for the water rather than air temperature
- be ready for the worst case scenario
- don't ever wear cotton
- get out of the water as quickly as possible
- good, sound judgement
Silk or another synthetic material that wicks moisture away from your body next to your skin. Wools and fleece are a good insulating layer since they will keep you warm even when soaking wet, and nylon shell on the outside to break the wind. All of these items can be picked up at K-Mart or Walmart relatively cheap...or you can pay the big bucks for the logos!
Most important in winter regardless of the activity, Always wear a warm hat
