No, it's not you... the hackle and the wings are too long. I usually tie nymphs, midges, etc. So I am working on dry flies like this, but it certainly is a learning curve. The recent ones that I have tied are closer to being proportionate.

But you do raise a question for me. On the wings and the hackle, I have a diagram from Fly Rod and Reel that purports to show proportions. It says the hackle can be 1 to 2x hook gap. Is that not right?
