Montana Yellowstone Cutthroat To Be Moved.
1,000 Yellowstone Cutthroat are being moved from Upper and Lower Deer Creek, that flow through the 200,000 acre Derby Mt. fire. These streams are south of Big Timber in south central Montana.
The Yellowstone Cutts are being flown 30 miles southeast to several streams. The destinations streams are being cleared of their resident Brook and Brown trout. There is no threat to the Deer Creek Yellowstone Cutthroat at the present time, but the Spring runoff will wash ash and sediment into Upper and Lower Deer Creek, possibly ruining the habitat. It could take five years for the Yellowstone Cutthroat to be returned to Deer Creek.
Yellowstone Cutthroat are a species of special concern and they only occupy 10 per cent of their original habitat.
