What is high-sticking exactly? Reason I ask is because I got a new St.Croix Premier rod for my birthday and the little manual that came with it warns that high-sticking may break the rod.

The high sticking reffered to by St Croix can happen when landing fish(usually big). By holding the rod up past verticle with the fish near your feet your are over stressing the rod by causing it to be bent more than 90 degrees. You can see this done on many fishing tv shows as they are horseing a fish as it nears the boat. It is harmful and will eventually cause your rod to break( especially in the higher matrix graphite rods)

You will also hear the term used by nymph fly fishers. By holding there rods high in the middle of the nymph drift in the stream they are trying to hold fly line off the water for drag free drift. With this controlled slack presentationthey are trying to get their fly to drift in the stream as if it were not connected to their line there by fooling the fish. This type of high sticking causes no stress on the fly rod and is therefore perfectly safe.

Thanks ok. I did see a reference to high-sticking in nymph fishing. That's why I was confused.

Here in Canada every kid knows that High sticking will get you a 2 minute penalty. lol
