Crook, ask this question on the northern California flyfishing board at www.ncffb.org . A bunch of those folks fish Pyramid regularly. Search the archive as well.

The Popcorn Beetle is just a #10-12 scud hook (e.g. TMC2457) with a crystal chenille body and a foam overbody/sheel back. Some add a marabou tail, which is called a "Tadpole." Take a strip of foam about gape width, tie it down from eye to bend with excess hanging over the back of the hook. Tie in and wrap shank with crystal chenille. Bring shell back over body, tie in at eye, and cut just in front of the hook eye to form the head. Best colors are black/chartreuese and white/chartreuse. Give the guys at the Reno Fly Shop a call for patterns and materials: http://www.renoflyshop.com/.
Of course, just a plain old Woolly Bugger will catch just as many fish...
Thank you folks. May not even get there this trip but want to be prepared in case. Rich

I had a brother lived in Reno and he used plain old
woolie worms, which I tied and sent to him and he used to catch some monsters there. I think he used spinning gear, though. Jaybee
