Default Backing on a trout reel

For the past couple of months I've been spending my weekends running the pay-to-fish ponds at the state trout hatchery.
This past weekend was the first days that the trout were taking surface flys.
Never let anyone tell you that the backing on your trout reel is there only to take up space!
During the short time I got to fish, I was in to my backing three times. All fish over twenty inches.(don't tell my boss)
The simpler the outfit, the more skill it takes to manage it, and the more pleasure one gets in his achievements.

    Hi dudley,

Your secret is ok with us. Where did you say that pond was? <G> Backing is important because you never know when you'll hook "your fish of a lifetime." Take care & ...

JC - I've read your reply 3 times, and I chuckle every time. There should be a new heading for humor and sarcasm!

    Chris,
These fish are fished over hard evey weekend.
Up to 30 anglers per acre. They can be very selective.
This is not the way I prefer to fish, I just work there. ... And take advantage of it.

    Dudley,

    Wasn't a dig, ... just a joke

We have some pools here on my home waters that hold trout for 3-4 months as they are waiting to move up into the beds.

After a few weeks, we actually give some of the big Bulls NAMES.

I can only imagine how "selective" those hatchery populations can get.
