I do it sometimes when craneflies are out. Take a big leggy bug and skate it across the top of the water. It's a fun way to fish.
Great idea Byron. Mixing the best of both worlds. I wold think that would work very nicely.
Beautiful tie!
Very cool to hear some of the history of the fly Byron. I will have to pick up that book. To me the main advantage of the sparkle dun is durability as I have had those CDC fibers break off,...
I am a big fan of LaFontaine's Duck butt dun. I tie it with a biot body but that fly catches more fish for me than any other. Of course a regular old sparkle dun may do just as good, but I like his...
Oh boy. I been april fooled. :D
Congrats Kelly. Sweet bug! Enjoy the vise.
Interesting pattern. Looks like that thing should float for days! Thanks for the SBS Scott.
Great Idea sir. My first vise was a Regal Inex and I regret the day in a moment of weakness I sold it. Should have done something similar, or held on to it for my kids to learn on.
Awesome Kelly! Happy bday.
Fishing from a Drift boat one afternoon we were having so so luck. Landing a few fish here and there, but it wasn't hot. We floated into a side channel, and in about 75 yards of river bank I got...
Getting a bad batch of hooks can turn a guy off in a hurry. One of the first batches of Dai Riki hooks I bought all would straighten out on me after a couple fish so I quit buying any Dai Riki...
Oh yeah I love popcorn. And the extra butter on the fingers gives some extra water resistance to those flies. :D
There is not a chance in the world I would win a contest like this, because this is my desk as clean as it will ever be:

I generally use Byron's thought process on my biot bodies. I like the smooth for any fly that will remotely resemble the dun or spinner profile, even later stage emergers. Most of the Mayfly...
I do tie that style quite a bit. I like it a lot, and it catches a lot of fish. So simple, and it works.
Nice fly John. I may have to give it a go here on the local river with a pretty good mahogany hatch. It's a fish catcher I am sure.
Nice Fish John! That is a beast of a Cuttie! Now I will need the GPS Coordinates for my trip through there this weekend. ;)
It's a Hareline product called Sparkle Emerger Yarn. I use it in Amber for trailing shucks quite often.
My favorite and most productive mayfly CDC patterns in their BWO forms:

Thats an impressive display of "thinking outside the box." Consider me intrigued.
I had someone tell me that combing out certain macrame cords will yield EP fibers or something that is a viable substitute anyway. I have never tied with EP fibers, just passing that along.
I own three regals. I started tying on the fixed head Inex. Then moved up to the Medalion with standard jaws. I easily tied flies down to #22 and even dipped lower, but was always very careful...
http://youtu.be/Qg8Up5ph8Fo I have always thought it was a pretty cool way of doing these, and it's the only regret I have about owning a regal vise. It's tough to do without a true rotary I have...
