Yes, I caught one a popper right after I was told they wouldn't hit them. I do agree that you probably won't catch them routinely on poppers.
You can use anything from 6- to 8-weight. I like an intermediate sinktip line with 12-pound tippet and 20-pound fluoro shock.
Good going, Dave! They're great fish. We call them shellcracker. I catch most of them on nymphs under and indicator. Years ago, I was competing in a fly tournament on Lake Okeechobee. I was told...
How many times have you been out on a slow day and had a bluegill hit when you turned to talk to your buddy? Or were distracted and were looking away?
Slow is the key!
Had one of my better days in years, so that leads me to believe that this could be one of our better seasons for beach snook. That's if the weather cooperates. Looks like some bad weather for the...
You hit the nail on the head, Mylo! Darn you.
I've been fishing a small lake east of Naples, Fla., for the past two years. Not only does it have a good population of peacock bass, but also a lot of monster Mayan cichlid and some of the largest...
My goodness, people, this was a post about fly fishing and catching tilapia. How did it turn into a debate on the edibility of the species and the health benefits of doing so? What's the obsession...
Good luck, Ted. Let us know how you do. Stop in at Norm Zieglar's Fly Shop on Sanibel.
So far, so good. Fish numbers are increasing daily. I've seen quite a few big snook, too. Last couple of times out, the fish were very aggressive. Peak season in my neck of the woods is July and...
In Florida, a stumpknocker is a spotted sunfish -- not a shellcracker. Funny how names differ depending on locale.
I took a friend from the Mangrove Coast Fly Fishers out to sight-fish snook in the surf. He had been a few times, but had never even seen a snook in the surf -- let along caught one.
We drove to a...
One of the benefits of fishing from a kayak is that you can fish just about anywhere you want. All you need is a place to launch.
I discovered a small lake recently that's inside a local preserve....
Glad you and Susan had a great time and caught a few fish. You ain't seen nothing, yet! Looking forward to your return trip.
I'm not sure the state keeps records on Mayans, but I found this at http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/freshwater/nonnatives/mayan-cichlid/:
Largest measured by Commission scientists was...
If you've ever caught a Mayan cichlid, then you know what speed and strength is. These are amazing exotics that live in south Florida. Typically, we catch Mayans that go 10 inches or less. However,...
Lee S. and Susan fished with me during their recent trip to Florida. Each caught his/her first snook and first spotted seatrout. Fishing wasn't easy, but their persistence paid off. They had to work...
If you like to sight-fish for tarpon with fly rod, then Sarasota is the best place that you've never heard about to do it. The tarpon have started to show up and it gets better as the water heats up....
This is some of my favorite fishing. If you close your eyes and fantasize a bit, you can imagine you're fishing along a beach in some remote destination for bonefish. The beach snook season can begin...
That beach looks familiar. Wife and I went to the beach Sunday. She saw a couple of fish. We weren't fishing, but I headed out Thursday to scope out a spot. Thought the wind was out of the east, the...
I haven't broken a BVK (knock on wood). This is news to me. Never heard about a breakage problem.
Lot of love for the BVK here. I have owned and used a variety of fly rods over the years. Have to say I like the BVK above all others. Great rod for a great price. I have them all matched with the...
I am sponsored by TFO, but haven't used the Clouser or Mini Mag. I have recently switched the the TFO BVKs and really like them. I have them in 6, 7 and 8 weights. Great rods for the money.
The wind continues to blow. So, I headed out to Lake Manatee and drove to the east end where the Verna-Bethany Bridge crosses the lake. Wanted to see if we could launch kayaks there. We could. It was...
