They are hollow- until you wrap them on a hook shank. Then they flatten out, squashing the inner air space. They make decent segmented-looking bodies, but don't use them for floatation.

Ralph, before a recent trip to Michigan's AuSable, I looked at the reels I might take with me. I realized that my Orvis Battenkill, with a couple of extra spools, had always done right by me. And it...

Mr. Sawyer was primarily speaking of blue wing olives, which are fine swimmers. Many of the nymphs that we attempt to imitate are not so good at it. They do their best to reach the surface, or...

That's my experience too, Ray. I'll go back a lot of years. I once bought a Henry Hoffman grizz neck back in the early 80's. Now, I know that subsequent strains kept getting better, but that was one...

That 3-weight (with a 4-weight line) is my go-to creek rod. Hope they never stop making it. May try the 4-weight, if NJTB likes his so much.

Yeah, you probably would. With that many bugs on the water, your fly would just disappear. But who knows? I'd give it a try.

Yes there are, but I suspect we often overthink the idea of closely matching only the fauna of a particular body of water. Perhaps a trout chomps on a fly just because it looks alive and, as been...

"The diameter of the tip of a 5 wt fly line should be about .022"

Silver, maybe it's because I haven't bought a 5-wt. line in a few years, but I've never had one mic nearly that small. They all...

Scott, I assume you don't wrap the foam body too tightly. That would collapse the wee air cells in it, right? Did I just say "wee"? Been watching a lot of Davey McPhail, I guess.

I guess I don't understand the "no cement on dries, cement on nymphs and wets, etc.". Why not on dries? Don't say it adds extra weight. A mini drop of cement won't sink your dry flies.
