I have some really old books -- from the 60's believe it or not and these are great for some older patterns that are still used today. Problem is, they don't talk about the new materials. I would...
I'm not sure, but I'm afaid of silicone. I used the waterproofing stuff that is mostly silicone on a pair of boots many years ago. It ruined the leather. Anybody else try silicone on a reel?

That's a lot of great information and I want to thank everyone. One more question.
What size barbell do you use on the little versions or do you use different kinds of eye?
Thanks again,

I'm new to fly tying and fly fishing in general, starting out just this year. I've started tying the Clouser Minnow and Lefty's Deceiver in the standard colors.
I've read that you should go with...
I like to use the stirrers in Dunkin Donuts. My tube flys are used in Salt mostly and are about 1/2 inch long at most. The Dunkin Donuts tubes ;-) have two holes and take a 15 or 25 # test line...
I made this comment somewhere else on the site. I clean my line in baby shampoo and use Cortland line cleaner. I put some on a piece of old cotton teeshirt have someone reel it in while I clean the...
I don't know a lot about fly fishing (see some of my posts ;-) but I do know about computer systems (over 30 years of experience).
Most commercial anti-virus and spyware systems go way to far...
This may sound a bit dumb, but I have problems with my line hand getting very cold this time of year. My hand gets wet when stripping line and then, if its windy, my hand gets very cold.

That's one reason I like the salt so much. The other reason is that I fish a relatively unfished spot on Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn, NY with my...
Thanks all for the great feedback on this question. In answer to the one question: I am new to fly fishing. My casting leaves a bit to be desired, but I get it out there ok. I practice all the...
Have you ever heard of anyone using this type of rig for on-shore saltwater? I have an idea that this may be effective on some of the bottom dwellers like flounder or blackfish.

I noticed a post back awhile where a lot of folks fish for flounder on a fly.
Couple of questions:
1. Do you have to use a sinking line? I've only fished a floater and I'm a little afraid to try...
Thanks, Bill, but the one I saw in the Bate's book was different than the ones that I see on other web sites. The one I saw used a treble hook, some monofilament, and bucktail or other fur tied to a...
I found a great book in the library: Joseph Bate's "Bucktails and Streamers" (1979). This book has a great history of fly fishing, some really great old patterns, and some wonderfully sage advice...
I had two store that sell fly fishing equipment and supplies in my area and one of them (it sells all types of sporting goods) seems to be reducing its fly fishing department.
I always buy from...
The last time I looked at shipping costs for some materials I bought, I started checking out the dog as an alternate source. He's starting to get suspicious.
This was a new guy question. Not trying to put anyone on. I read a lot, post questions on this site and fish. I figure that's the best way to learn.
My problem is that in my experience in...
Not a river story, but I got caught not paying attention to the tide while fishing in a bay in NY. Turned to get out quick and stepped into a hole.
Reason I bring it up, lots of river fishing is in...
Done the reading, looked at the rods in the stores, but I have a question ...

I'm new to fly fishing and especially new to fly tying, although I've been fishing for over 50 years.
The best thing I ever did was find flyanglersonline I've learned more here than I ever did...
