I'm with Bamboozle on line length, when I'm fishing a still water lake or pond from shore, I also like to fish a 25-30' line. Just personal preference, but I like the extra range.

Don't say I didn't warn you guys and gals, it's habit forming. Try it once or twice and you'll be hooked.
When fixed-length-line fly fishing was first being discussed in the U.S. a few seasons...
Casey,
That's a very good point. When fishing with a fixed-length-line system, it's a "fixed system". There is no give. Apply enough pressure, and something is going to sooner or later fail....
Tenkara and sunfish (including bass) go together like beer and pizza.
Of course if you are fishing in tight conditions, that free hand comes into play to make a bow and arrow/slingshot cast. And if all goes according to plan, the oft hand is kept busy doing "the...
Beware, you will find it addictive! More fun while catching more fish.
It's funny, that was my first impression, what do I do with my free hand?
Sounds like you had a great first time out.
I do have some fish come off when I grab the line, but since I fish c&R, I view that as an advantage.
Regarding your shoulder, when I first started,...
I'm not sure how well the tip top/guides would work out on a Tenkara Rod. The top most 4 or 5 sections very flexible, the rods bend in quite an extreme arc when under load, they may not be able to...
John,
I'm envious of your ability to take self portrait fish pictures. Unfortunately for me, this is how most of mine come out looking -

I agree that a good furled line does almost cast itself. You shouldn't have any problem casting one with your bare hands, having a 11 or 12 foot lever makes it pretty effortless. Fishing some other...
If you tend to fish that way pretty consistently thru the course of a day, you might want to go with a right angle set up. Attach your indicator to the end of your tenkara line (or perhaps a single...
Regarding fishing weighted nymphs/indicators. I think you have three ways to go. If the weight and wind resistance is minimal, you should be all set with a standard tenkara line/leader/tippet...
My use of Tenkara is probably different from most in that I fish big waters. The waters I fish tend also to be popular and well known. I'm not overly concerned about lining fish. The fish in my...
Regarding lining fish, just out of curiosity, how long a leader/tippet do y'all usually fish?
I personally usually fish about a 7' three step single strand leader/tippet on the end of my furled...
I find a foam donut a very useful accessory to help manage line when storing your rod -

Watch out, it can become addictive.
Chris is spot on regarding his wisdom about fly selection and manipulation.
I think the concept of using a generic pattern with a variety of presentations is one of the most over looked advantages...
Most of the folks I've encountered express interest. Particularly if they had seen the technique in action. It can be very effective.
John,
Regarding the "stringy" stuff in tenkara, I bet alot of folks are going to come up with a bunch of combinations to fit their particular needs and style. As a result of being an old dog, I...
I've been fishing Tenkara style for the past year and find it very enjoyable and at least fairly versatile for the waters I fish.
The main advantage I see to fishing Tenkara style is the total...
