I agree with Jim on the Walmart poppers this time of year (although I use the 'Miss Prissy'), but don't forget to put a bead headed nymph on behind it. Last week they didn't like the popper, but...

I just bought a chest pack/backpack combo for fly fishing and it seems to work well. I especially like the fold down flap so that I have a 'table' to use in the midle of a stream.
I found one in cabela's, Mike. Their Three Forks II model comes in sizes up to 5X.

I use something similar. I bought a 1/2 inch wide roll of magnetic tape with a pre-glued side. Cut off what you want, take off the protective strip, and put it anywhere you'd like. Available at hobby...
The red bud bushes are budding here now. That's out sign that it's CRAPPIE time in southern West Virginia.......wheeeeeeee!

I've used a slip on stud bottom for walking on ice when I worked on the railroad, and just happened to have a few pair at the house when i retired. I use them on my felt bottomed waders and they seem...
In January I was fishing on the Gauley River tailwaters at Summersville Dam. Since the water was roaring, I'd decided to wear my bib overalls instead of waders. During a 'nature break' I unknowingly...
Great news Mike! Now go out there and catch a big'n with it and come back in the chat room and brag. Lucky you; it'll probably be a state record!
Mike (one of those that DIDN'T win a new rod)
Welcome to the crew SW and don't worry about the pirates; most of them are harmless relics in here..lol.
I'm going to try to make it up your way later in the spring to visit my daugher in Easton,...
I have a question on this subject. What consitutes 'navigable water'? We have a great little trout/smallie creek here (in Virginia), that is big enough to use a portable poontoon or canoe on. Would...
I use a lot of 'kitty dubbing' here and the cats love the brushings! My wife frowns on me using the coffee grinder so I have to resort to scissors to size it. I also use the outside layer of braided...
I've recently started making my own furled leaders here and used a 'receipe' from an article I found. I tried to bring up the site again, but it doesn't seem avaible. So I can send you a copy of it...
Snot instead of spit on your knots??? No wonder us newbies are always having our knots come undone. With this cold that's been hanging on this year, and the begining of allergy season I should'd have...
Personally, I like being the only one with a fly rod amonst the spincasters, and they seem to enjoy it too (At least the laughs I get when I backcast into trees are good natured). When I do connect...
It sounds just like here in southern West Virginia Bob. My son and I spent 3 days on Anthony creek watching the water rage by. At least on the third day it cleared up a bit and was able to coax a few...
I have a friend that is begining to fly fish and she's looking for a pair of chest waders. She complains that all the waders she's looked at are all too long for her and a bit too tight also. Any...
I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, James, but I've had good luck with polyester thread (under $3 for a 6000 yard roll at Wal Mart). So far, it works great with wooly buggers, but it...
This last Tuesday was as perfect a March day as could be expected in southern West Virginia, so I decided to go to the local pond and practice my casting. To my joy, the state had decided to stock...
My wife read your post and thought it was a great idea for us on our second honeymoon; as long as she got the credit cards and went shopping while i fished!

Spring's around the corner here in West Virginia too, I saw my first pair of Robins at the feeder Monday; now to see that first Bluebird!!!

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I'm a Newbie too, Take, so don't feel that you're in that stream alone! I found an article on furled leaders including the instructions for making your own. I'm going to try my hand at it and just...
Great pictures!.....I hope it doesn't hurt your feelings that we have an 'open season' here........and have had a mild winter........and that I'm retired......and my wife loves for me to go out and...
ty betty......and i've got a friend with a black lab that has 'voluteered' to let me have some also......all i have to do is bring my brush up and git started.....what a pal!
On the subject of useful items not normally thought of as 'official fly material', I was looking for some dubbing the other day, and noticed that my wife's calico cat had just what I needed. A few...
