Loo at the Fly Shop in Redding. They have a rod made for them by Scott. It's a 9' 8" or 9'9" 7wt that I bought. Every guy I talked to at the shop suggested it and they were on the money.
My buddy just bought one and loves it. $$$$, but I'd say you get what you pay for.
Scott A3 hands down. Great rod, totally made in the USA, and lifetime warranty.
I'd get the Korkers boots for $89. They have the vibram style sole, I think they call it kling-on rubber, and you get a pair of felt soles to go with it as well. Best deal going and 10 bucks less...
I have a pair of the Predator boots with the Boa lace system...best boots I've ever owned! Comfortable and man that lace system makes me never want to tie my wading boots again. Especially on cold...
I second the Korkers idea. I have a pair with their Kling On sole (rubber like Simms Vibram) and felt sole. I also have a pair of Simms Guides in their Vibram. The Vibram is super slick on our rives...
I wouldn't even bother converting them. First off, Simms loves for people to think that the felt soles are the main way hitchhikers are spread when in actuality it is the insoles, tongue gussets on...
I switched to Korkers so I can change felt out with studded felt when I needed to. So far, no problems and changing the soles is easy once you do it a few times. Plus the entire replacement sole is...
Try them on and don't fall for the Gore-Tex hype. 10 years ago, it was the best breathable material, but now, Gore-Tex type materials are very, very good. Cloudveil and Patagonia are both very good...
I am a huge fan of the Airflo in the saltwater. The core is low stretch, which is another cool fact about their lines, and makes for a stronger, quicker hookset especially on tarpon or bonefish at...
I really don't see any evidence that felt will be totally banned. It appears Alaska and Maine (I think) have gone that route, but by in large, it's putting a band-aid on a gunshot wound. Like someone...
Looks like a good deal, esp if they're using the same zipper as on the Simms. Esp since the Simms are four times the cost. I've learned Gore Tex ain't all that...esp with some of these new materials...
A guy at the flyshop told me Nautilus is coming out with a new click and pawl reel that is supposed to be loud and really cool looking. I've not seen it, just going by what the guys were saying at...
Has anyone tried the Redington CPX waders? I was thinking about getting a pair, but the shop I went into was putting a super hard sell on me and I want to get a second opinion. The look good, but the...
I don't even know if you can compare the two fairly. I've cast both and the Sage wins the contest every time...but it's also twice the price.
I cast the Xi3 in a lot of line weights when I was making up my mind on a new rod. I liked them better than the Xi3 for sure, way better with line feel at distance and it did seem to cast a little...
I was told by a Simms rep at a fly fishing show in Asheville that the new Simms Vibram holds BETTER than felt. Everyone at the group laughed at him. I can't argue that the rubber soles hold decent. I...
Well, Sage and Scott I know both keep the mandrels and will roll a blank and build it up if you break, say an old Scott G series or Sage RPL. At least they last time I broke my 8'8" 3wt G series,...
I looked at the glass on the Hardy site, but didn't see the overseas part. I'll look again. Seems nice for a glass rod. I really want a Scott Fibertouch, but they don't make an 8' 5wt and they're...
I agree. I still own a few IM6 Winstons, but bought the BIIx and didn't really like it. I wound up selling it and bought a Scott G2.
Has anyone cast the Hardy glass rods? I was looking at them and they looked pretty nice. Are they made in England or Totally Foreign Overseas land (i.e. China, Korea)? For the price, I'm suspecting...
I'm a fan of the GPX for "faster" action rods. It seems to stay slicker longer. I think Cortland western trout lines are heavier, but I'm not sure.
Winston hands down. It's not a matter of just using boron in the rods, but rod taper, scrim, etc. W&M rods just simply cannot compare to the Winston BIIX. Well, that's this year. My flyshop told me...
That's one of the reasons I stick with companies like Scott and Sage that will repair the rod sent back and repair it, not replace it and run into issues like the one listed here. I used to be a fan...
