I second the Wiss snips, they fit great in my hand, cut great, have replaceable blades. I've used mine for 3 years now on the same blades.
I've used several different formulas, but I think making the butt and quick taper out of a stiff mono helps, I use Maxima, then softer for 5X on down works for me. I like Umpqua tippet material.
I use just plain ol gloss laquer, a quart for ten bucks
Nice Bulls!!!!!!!!
I buy a big bag of rubber bands, and use the wider ones!! been using them for years, I just replace them as needed, but always at least once a year.
Mike, I got some flies and tapered leaders coming your way.
Dave,
Made it out to a lake near Stuart last Monday, I too caught 10 inchers.
Seems they haven't spawned yet, both males and females were full. i'm sure they are now, but haven't seen the elephant...
I use Turkey flats or T-base feathers, either one works well for me.
I think it might be a kind of goldfish
If anyone has coq de leon feathers they would like to part with, I have pheasant tail clumps to trade.

silver, purple, and chartreuse??? is it legal to fish something with that color combo in Iowa????? lol
nice fish and flies Dave, things are starting to heat up out here in west central Iowa too!!!! Hope this cold snap won't back things up again.
Tim
nice looking poppers and sliders Jeff. what size hook are you using??
Otto,
One of my go to nymphs is a pheasant tail, various sizes for trout and a little bigger for bluegills. If you have a hard time finding them, send me your address and i'll send you a nice Iowa...
Caught my first fish of the year out of a pond Sunday here in Iowa.
Surface temp was 45, caught bass and crappies on beadhead black wooly buggers!!!!
So when stacking and or spinning deer hair, which thread works the best?? I've used monocord, kevlar, and gudebrod g.
cycler,
when I lived in A.P. we had good pike fishing right after ice out. Pike will move up to the shallows, or upstream to feeder creeks to spawn, they look for places right after ice out!!!
cycler,
I went to high school in Arnolds Park, Linn Grove is around some of my old stomping grounds. I've always wanted to catch some pike on a fly. where do you fish for them around Linn Grove???
I've used a Crown Vise for 10 years, It's a Regal knock off. Sportsmans Warehouse has em for about 40 bucks. I tie 22 - 2/0 hooks on it, never had a problem.
I think you might be a bit early too, but I sure hope your right. Early March would be great!!!! In ponds and small lakes here in Stuart,( west central Iowa), I always seem to do good with beadhead...
Here ya go. In Iowa, we can not hunt doves, they are protected. Therefor we can not have the feathers in our posession. Plain and simple.
on the bench, I always pretreat my drys with Watershed.

I've used Gink for 20 years, I'm happy with it. I too keep a tub of alboline, great stuff!!!!!!
Don't leave home without it.
Tim
I would think they would be great for damsel nymphs!!!!!!!
