what sharkskin line is it?
Your friends prolly right about the sharkskin line being useless in AZ;) The good news is that the Sharkskin line works just fine on our waters here in Maine. Just say the word and I'll be happy...
Hi Brannon, in the future try cutting the tag end flush with a razor blade. If a little bit of thread sticks up you can burnish it under with a fly tying bodkin or similar tool.
4 wraps in front...
Fly lines wts are a very foggy business. Some lines like the cortland 444 and H&H lines fall within AFFTA line wt standards, others exceed the AFFTA line standard by a half or more. Furthermore if...
If you are able to, test cast them both and see which one you like best.
Hi Joe, I used GudeBrod ncp white for the tipping. I've tried color preserving white silk thread and it doesn't work very well; looks semi transparent/creamy white.
Ken, I use YLI brand silk thread or Pearsall's gossamer silk thread for translucnet wraps. Both brands work well. It's a little harder wrapping fine silk thread on an unsanded blank but nothing...
I don't think anybody did either, I know I didn't. You asked, Mr. Gemrod, if backing could be taped to the Arbor. Sure it can but a person can't help but wonder why somebody would need to tape...
For those of you who are familiar with Steffen Bros fiberglass fly rods you know how sweet his 5/6 wts are. Hard to find long 5/6 wt fiberglass blanks as nice as the ones Mark Steffen makes. ...
I'm not sure if your being serious but I can't imagine it would be any quicker or easier trying to tape the backing to the spool arbor than it would to tie a simple backing to arbor knot.
Congratulations on your 1st rod. The RX7 blanks are nice! Like Buddy said you can achieve "low build" finish work with any two part epoxy that is on the market. Lots of ways to achieve low build...
another way is to soak a coffee filter in rubbing alcohol and simply wipe it off. If you used a credit card to scrape the epoxy off you can clean up any residue with the rubbing alcohol also.
If...
No doubt it can turn into an expensive past time but it doesn't need to be. I think it's safe to say a lot of fly fisherman started building rods to save money (i did). Like ol' blue mentions a...
Big butts are the norm in the world of fiberglass. Pac bay dl5/ul5 and Anglers workshop ADD reel seats will fit a .426 butt. For a little more coin many of the REC reel seats will work and they...
It's a decal, Sister Bernice wouldn't have been to impressed with my penmanship.
Gary loomis is manufacturing graphite blanks under the North Fork Composites brand now. Maybe H&H will sell NFC blanks when they're available? Romor has it that the blanks will be reasonably...
If you look at the price that other fly rod companies sell their top end made in America fly rods for, the Orvis Helios at $495 is a pretty good deal. Heck if the only difference between a $700...
Ditto what Joe said.
I spent my high school and early twenties winter Steelheading on Erie and Ontario tribs and a ten ft rod was only an advantage. I prefer a 6wt but that's just me.
Great rod for fall run browns also. Nice job. Is that Bul5 reel seat hardware?
Ha! Thanks Mojo. Art? Well if we can call working with thread and glue art than I'm all for it! When our 5 year old daughter sees me wrapping a rod she never fails to remind me that they have...
Thanks everyone. The thread is finished with Flex Coat epoxy. Jasper was color preserved first.
Jeremy it might surprise you to know that I build quite a few glass rods for some very serious...
Well I guess us glass lovers couldn't keep the secret to ourselves forever. Here is a few pics of the latest Lamiglas fly rod I've made for an over seas customer; a Gentleman who imo has exquisite...
Any idea what the blank is?
With the exception of Boar mountain (who builds a nice stick) I'm not familiar with the the other builders mentioned so this is in no way a comment on their work..Although it's obvious it's worth...
Good choice! Lamiglas makes a very credible 3wt in either 6'6" or 7' length. The Lami 7'3wt is my favorite of all the Lamiglas "honey" blanks and many many thread colors look great on the blank.
