ESL - Egg Sucking Leech - for whatever reason, i have seen that one more than a few times.
We were typing at the same time i guess.......... what he said! :D
DonO1 - Betting those would work well on smallmouth when they are in minnow mode during the fall. What is the body on the conehead you show?
The Rolex looks very similar to a pattern i know...
No shad to speak of. Most abundant minnows are probably chubs - but there are a lot of carp and carpsuckers species in the river that i would guess make up a large portion of diet to any predators. ...
Favorite color pattern for smallies (and just about everything else) on my local river.
- cones are tungsten on #2 Mustad 3366 hooks
- pearl/gold OR pearl/white twisted chenille
Others are...
I like it - that will make a good imitation.
I agree and (sorta) disagree. :p
I do agree that the hook is by far more efficient if it is riding point up, especialy on down and dirty weighted...
Wow!!! Thanks for the link Dub!!! That one got book marked - lots to read/re-read. I have wax dubbed mainly with some frustrated loop attempts for a long time just because i thought wax was...
Cottonwood (basswood?) is flying here too... when it stacks up in eddy pools the carp are not far and will willingly take drys as they are slurping up the fluffs - if you don't spook them in the...
That is an amazing looking fish! Looks like it belongs in an aquarium.
Those all look like killer baits! ooops..... i mean flies. ha! :D Seriously though, they have me thinking i need to try to tie some and see if i can get some wiggle. Thanks for posting.
Nice stringer!!!! Does sound like a cool concept fly... the sickle even more interesting. That would give you plenty of gap room to play around with a body. Would like to see it when you get some...
Looks like this question has many options and it mostly goes by personal preferece.
I have just started tying them down to smaller sizes in recent months so you'll have to take my answer with a...
Got out with my kids on saturday night... spent most of the time baiting and chucking bobbers out for them. :) But i did take my fly rod along and managed to cast it a few times. Got a few small...
Mine showed up also. Thanks for hosting Flygal and some nice work by everyone! .....rain, rain go away - got some new flies to sling today. :) Russ
Nice looking tie - get back on that vise and ride! :D
Rabbit Matukas (black/silver) proved very successful for river smallmouth bass for me last year... except i tied them 'upside-down' on nymph...
Those do look nice - good color choices. Have to make me a couple that are similar and try them.. thanks for sharing!
FishnDave - I use bunny strips ALOT and put the hide both up and down, try to hide the hide ( :D ) sometimes also with trimmed bunny hair or buck tail. Any way you do it... i love zonks and the fish...
WarrenP - Yes it is chenille over the eyes... ultra works much better wrapping around bead chain but medium is ok for the larger lead eyes. Most also have an alternate color chenille body behind the...
Found a site selling flies and started searching through to find some new bass patterns. Found what they called a Starlight fly and have been making up a few with some slight mods.
Made with #4...
Glad the staple thing works for you. Originaly saw the idea on a jig tying forum for keeping plastics on jigs - it does work well for the tiny ice jigs!!! ;) I also make them on jigs for live bait...
I definetly like those rubber tail baits... think i can picture the toys they came from also - those squishy balls? May have to buy one to mess with, think they are pretty cheap. Am really wanting...
J.Smith - I have spent some days lifting stones and digging through leaf litter in the river to find some for bait... they are VERY intimidating critters.
QK - The 8's should get some big gills...
Flygal - Got the PM and will send them out early next week.
okflyfisher - i put the reciepe up on the tying board - thanks!
This is a pattern i use alot on my local rivers for smallmouth & rockbass mostly but also throw it to active feeding carp with good results. I have never seen a fly quite like it - but i am sure...
