I have used colored pipe cleaners in place of chenille when I started. They add weight and do the same purpose.
You can also find it in Walmart in the golf section for weighting clubs. Theirs is sticky backed which will hold it in place.
And don't buy an el cheapo ceramic bobbin. I have two that cut thread as well or better than a straight razor.

Usually overtightening a mike when checking things is what springs them. If you are careful an inexpensive set will last quite a while and maintain decent accuracy for the average user.
