where?! who?! must go..!
i'm here finally. anyone wanna throw some flies? or, i'll mostly watch and learn while asking questions on lines/leaders/flies/tides for the area?
look for structure such as channels, oyster beds, and pilings. wait for tidal water movement. go to Angler's Edge in Houston for some good advice.
they aren't kidding about CT being a small state. ha!
if you're lucky you'll get into some trout. i live near the upper coast (Galveston) and for me, the trout fishing has been really good. could be b/c i had good timing. i'm sure clousers will do good...
i'll be right on the Eastern edge of West Hartford about a block from Prospect on Boulevard. we drove to Mystic and i think it only took an hour maybe. when i get there i'm gonna be looking to take...
any of you fish the CT coast? i'm gonna be living in West Hartford very soon and hopefully will arrive in time for some action. if anyone needs a reason to fish -- well, you're pathetic if you need a...
i just landed my first ever Jack BUT, it was on a trout rod (light baitcaster setup) with a Super Spook plug so to me, it doesn't count hehe. it fought like a dickens and took me a while to bring in,...
thanks. yeah, i read the tools part of the fly tying tutorial so that helped me figure out what everything besides the vice was hehe. man, this is gonna be fun. gonna tie some big Jack flies.
that wasn't too bad...

accidently tied the top wing to the bead eyes, but it's my first fly. yeeeehawwwww!
cool. got it. now to figure out the half-hitch thing... i'm in Houston so i'll probably get with the local fly tyers. they have monthly meetings i believe.
i'm trying to tie my first fly and all these instructions say to wrap thread to hook shank. how do you prevent the thread from unwrapping??? do i tie some kind of knot or just wrap it eye to shank...
i'm gonna sound really silly here, but i hope to have someone knock some sense into me... on my last trip to the beach i took time to pre-tie all the flies i might use onto all the leaders i might...
i've been to Freeport and go through it all the time on my way to Surfside and San Luis Pass, but i've never fished there. i hear Jacks hang out at the MOB so i may give it a shot soon.
oops. i have a mess of leaders here and my redfish leaders are actually 9-10ft 12lb. i think i'll stock up on some 15-20lbs leaders too.
will a 9ft tapered mono leader in a 2x size be sufficient for landing a Jack with an 8wt rod? i have no choice in the rod/line weight, but can change my selection of leader if it's not decent enough....
i thought about doing that too. i may practice Monday at the park.
what techniques do you use when a wind is blowing across from your casting arm to your other side basically blowing your line, and heavy fly, into your head? i've tried the crossarm thing but wonder...
i fished a TFO 3wt 7'6" for a little while and loved how accurate it was. it was probably a medium action rod.
curious how many have fished from a jetty with any success? in nearby Galveston the jetties don't exactly look fly-friendly as there's a rocky, slippery bank to the water to negotiate. so i think...
how deep does the water get before a stripping basket starts to become useless? i don't live too close to the water, so i go when i get time off. that sometimes means wind and choppy water and wading...
i told my girlfriend i'd stop fishing. then i broke up wthi her!
since i don't tie my own, i'll buy all my flys from the local shops. i'll buy everything i can from local shops and stop by my main shop to chat up techniques, flys, spots, etc. they're always...
me and a friend were cleaning out his storage space and came across several old fishing rods. some conventional, but many fly rods. a few were Heddon and some South Bend and maybe others, but what...
always wear them when wet wading. i on;y have a pair of Orvis sandals and the setup has served me very well in both Colorado streams and Texas coast. i do get a goofy sock tan when i wear shorts but...
