I recently went to using a splash top or semi dry top for all of my wilderness paddling, and day trips especially, instead of a rain jacket. The distinction to make is that a dry top is usually...
Thought some might be interested in this - I just got the new issue of Paddler magazine, and it has a one of the better sections I have seen devoted to Kayak fishing. One of the best is a review of...
Sizing kayak paddles - now thats a whole different ball of wax. Boat width, paddler height and stroke angle. Or, just go with what feels good!
-Erik
Sizing a paddle seems to be a question with no easy answer - Mike cites the one I think most paddle shops will use and it seems to be fairly accurate, but you suggestion, dudley, strikes me as...
Good call on WCHA - they are a great resource. I have paddled quite a few cedar strips and would have to agree - but I've also paddled some poorly designed ones that were squirrely as all get out. I...
I have to agree - Last winter I came across a wounded doe during the winter that had been hit the previous night I guess. I was out hiking and decided to leave it to pass in peace. The next day...
It's definitely interested me, but at this point, time and space is a big issue of why not. There are a few guys in MN that are making them still, but the wait list is longer than it was for a Seliga...
All my knot skills came from the climbing end of things too, but I guess I never gave it much thought for fishing because I always tie a back up knot while climbing. Guess I'll have to give it a try!...
Great question -
A lot of the features you want are available on a lot of GPS units, but first let me say, I am biased. I have used Lowrance, Magellan and Garmin, and I prefer any Garmin product...
This is a good idea and I might sill give that a go.
Just to update, everything turned out fine, punched a few last night using a hammer and a suitable surface as not to damage the punch. The...
It seems to me to be similar in look to a carolina rigged bait that people use for bass. Given that, and it would all depend on size, you can usually find that bead in most fishing sections. Gander...
They don't have to be waterproof, but it's nice if they are, so they person who finds your dropped fly box gets flies that are in good, dry condition.

Fantastic, see now if the can were a little more clear and I a little quicker, this might have saved me seom time. 12 hours later it does seem to be set up a lot better, no sliding or anything. I am...
I know this might look like some other posts on the topic, but I've searched back a ways and can't find the exact answer to my predicament.
I have a few sheets of craft foam that I have laminated...
My experience is a little different, but fishing MN lakes, I've gotten good panfish action on a blue damsel similar to the link you posted.
They're no magic bullet, but on warm sunny days in early...
That's the meanest looking stinger I've ever seen. Great fly!

Apparently I missed this before, but that worked out alright because I got to read every post till now!
My name is Erik, and I hail from one of the great canoeing states in this country.
I started...
I would think your cat would work OK with double blade - with a major exception: it has what I would consider a rather large foot-print one the water and will probably not paddle efficiently in a...
Not only is it a good backup, but a fantastic primary paddle. The reality is for most paddlers that a straight shaft is going to be the easiest to operate and maneuver with.
While a bent shaft will...
That's a real nice jacket! glad to see another lotus fan here. :D

I've been intrigued by the inflatables, but being a paddler first, my choice has always been a lotus designs lola - awesome range of movement and an easy pocket and lash tab. Personally, I can't ask...
I'm glad the questions are being asked. I was happy to fill it out.
I have used bent shafts quite a bit but as Jim Hatch said, I find them best for straight line paddling. They are not designed for control strokes like a J-Stroke or Draw so they tend to be awkward...
More than anything I like to use chartreuse Copper Johns, followed closely by a wine colored Copper John. I recently started tying and using Barr's Graphic Caddis with good success too.
