I keep my better tinsels in boxes - one is plastic the other a cigar box . Both have covers which are kept closed when not in use and are stored in cabinets to keep as much light from them as much as...
I bought my Standard in late 1980's . The only thing replaced in all that time is the delrin washers on the barrel . Absolutely the best vise I have seen or used ever and it is versatile for any hook...
I bought my first Spey rod in fall 2009 for Atalntic salmon fishing . Season opens June 1 and I hope to be proficient enough to use the rod effectively then .........Frank
I have three of them , along with many other brands , on my bench . The Rites are the best I have ever used in more than 30 years fly tying .............Frank
If you're going to use calf hair try body hair as it is straighter than calftail and stacks much easier..........Frank
Donald : These are both great reference books to have in your library . For learning purposes I would recommend Pryce-Tannatt over Kelson ............Frank
Sounds like you guys had a great day . Sure is hard to beat a day fishing for Brookies . Some pics would be nice to see too ...........Frank
I use deer body hair on some Atlantic Salmon patterns precisely for the reason that the hair flares around the hook shank when correctly placed . I would think the hair you need is hair from bucktail...
Is the 3399A hook included in the new offerings ? This is a popular hook up here for Atlantic Salmon bugs .Thanks.......Frank
I use turkey flats for wings on my Royal Coachmans as I find duck quills to be pretty fragile . The brookies here in Newfoundland certainly don't seem to mind.........Frank
Donald : I'm glad to see that you are posting again . Hope all is well with you . A friend of mine from Scotland who has lived in Newfoundland (Canada) for years now still uses the classic English...
Eric : A great start on this salmon fly instruction series . It made me realize I have to do a few featherwings for Christmas presents . I look forward to seeing Part 2 and learning more from...
Phil : I'd recommend you have a look at Scientific Anglers System 2 reels . They're well made and will last a lifetime if cared for . My oldest System 2 is about 22 years old and still works...
Salmo : I prefer Cellire for my flies . You should be able to get it from Bryant Freeman in Riverview , New Brunswick........Frank
Great idea,thanks for this Betty...........Frank
I have the Supreme for a 7 weight-have had no problems in 3 years with Atlantics up to 10 pounds or so.......Frank
I don't think I'd be too happy with this result . Where I live we sometimes catch more than one Atlantic salmon on the same fly and these fish can be 10 pounds or more . I prefer to take a bit more...
Dwight: I use Whiting saddles I dyed olive for use here in Newfoundland. They work well for dries for Brookies. I haven't yet tried them on Browns and Rainbows but intend to try them this...
Dwight : I always use bobbins for Uni-Stretch for salmon flies . I find ceramic tipped ones ideal as they will not cut the material......Frank
Ron: Congratulations to Vickie. That fly is very well done;amazing really for her first attempt.I know people who have been tying for 10+ years who have not done as well.........Frank
I'd say it doesn't matter from my experience.I tend to use white calf body hair or antron for most of my parachutes with a few fluorescent yellow or orange wing posts for a change.

Chris: There's a pool on our group's favourite river in Newfoundland, the Codroy, that has a nice sandy bank just right for afternoon naps in June when the salmon seem to take a siesta also.Opening day...
Swan feathers can be used in place of Goose Shoulders for building salmon fly wings. They are capable of building larger flies than can be done with Goose......Frank
