I thought that tip was especially helpfull for larger quilled feathers. Since I don't normally tie small flies the quill size and affect it has on the aerodynamics of the fly is not normally an issue...

I had seen that wing technique used in a fly-tying contest several years ago and immediately fell in love with them. They are super easy to tie and look great.
