OOOOooooohh. Huh. I guess I just need to practice. It's just frustrating, since it didn't seem to be an issue before.

OK, so I feel like a rube. The problem was that I've been wrapping the hackle in the same direction as the thread. You really gotta go the opposite direction to get it right. DUH!
Arnie, I'll be...
I've got a really cool scar on my neck from a fellow who was "one-hand spey casting" his five weight rod and sunk two barbs of the treble hook on his Panther Martin into me, then promptly removed it...
It's been about six months since I've tied any dry flies other than elk hair caddis. As a matter of fact, I only recently started tying again after a layoff due to rotator cuff surgery. I'm...
+1
There are several well known guides who do just that - although they will vehemently deny it, when asked.
Never shave the day of a fishing trip. The shiny chin scares fish away.
If you're fishing from a boat for any reason, you MUST stop and get donuts. Otherwise, expect to get skunked.
I'm not...
Many of us are familiar with Dr. Slick tools, I'm sure. They need no introduction here, but just in case, they sell quality fly tying tools and streamside accessories. They're most known for their...
I use the cocoons clip-ons and I love 'em. They don't fall off if (when) I bump into something because of the way it hooks on the eyeglass frame. They work really well, too.
I prefer a tussle bug or San Juan Worm under my hoppers. As for the hopper itself, I've used tan, yellow, green and white. The white one didn't get much action, but the others were all about the...
That's a great idea, but there's one thing to consider. The type, color and size of the critters where you live are much different from the ones here in my neck of the woods. Hopefully, someone will...
I agree that floats have a place in a stillwater arsenal. I use a #6 hoppicator in orange, yellow or chartreuse, and it works great for depth control. It also catches fish on it's own once in a...
This is on Jeremy's site under Fly Tying:
http://www.taneycomotrout.com/theoriginalsowbug.html
Just a hint for tying the sowbugs:
Squish 'em flat. Sowbugs have a flatter, broader back than scuds, so squish 'em! I recommend googling "jeremy hunt original sowbug"
I'll be your Huckleberry! PM sent.
Ain't it though? Every time I think about going there again, I chicken out. I love catching those McClouds, though.
I thought Petey was an American Bulldog. He seemed too big to be a pitbull. But hey, what do I know. I was just a gleam in Daddy's eye until 1971!
That's basically the way I tie 'em. I like to use chartreuse or pink foam and black legs.
+1 on the foam hopper. I use foam spiders a lot - foam body and rubber legs - works great!
For warm water, I take #10 and #12. Any bigger than that will result in lots of misses. Any smaller, and you start hooking the really small, pesky bream.
I have four really awesome soft hackles I use for warm water.
For 'gills, I tie one with a peacock herl body and another with black dubbing. They seem to like it when it falls very slowly or sits...
Once met Ben Rothlisberger and his Dad on Taneycomo.
I was working at Bass Pro when George Bush (#41) visited - I know, we weren't on the water, but it was still kinda cool.
Kathy, I might be able to get you in touch with my daughter's 5th grade teachers. She's in a program here called WOLF - Wonders of the Outdoors Learning Facility. Essentially, it's a program that...
+1 for Rio. I use the Mainstream 5 wt. and it works fine. Lasts about 3 seasons if I clean & treat it regularly.
How about a bead head woolly bugger?
I guess what I do is considered using scent. I put small pieces of cardboard soaked in Anise oil in my fly storage box (not my fly box) to mask the scent of head cement. The glue smell really builds...
