gerry,
I now live in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, but I grew up in southern Illinois. My mother, and all of her brothers and sisters, were raised near Carbondale. To be specific, her place of...
The books 'Travers Corners' and 'Return to Travers Corners', I believe, are a collection of short stories that center around a rural town in Montana. I didn't know there was a connection to John...
Hi gang --
I'd love to hear stories from anyone that met or encountered John Voelker.
Just as interesting would be to hear praise from fans.
I live in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and have...

Why fish? It's never been said any better than this, and probably never will:
...
Frenchman's Pond with the Judge, a tin cup, some cheap Italian cigars, and something to drink from the cup. Because those things were always found together, I think that should qualify as one wish.
I still like Gary Borger's definition, which includes things other than insects . . . and his book is very good too.
You can restrict the use of the word nymph -- as it applies to fly fishing --...
Oh yes. Way harder to catch than I ever thought. The first time in my life that I had to chase after a fish to keep from getting to the end of my backing.
Everyone, please accept my apology for...
From Nymphing, by Gary Borger . . .
"In fly fishing, a nymph is loosely defined as any subaquatic, invertebrate food organism of the trout. ... Insects come first to mind, ... the smaller...
The knuckle comment is a good one. If the handle is near the outer edge of the reel, and if the reel spins at 16,000 rpm, then the velocity of the handle as it hit your knuckle would be about 200...
Andrew,
They will take just about any dry fly, as long as you fish a sink tip line or place a several split shot about a foot and a half above the fly. ...
At 16,000 rpm you get about 50 mph for every inch of diameter. So, 1 inch = 50 mph; 2 inches = 100 mph; 3 inches = carp velocity; etc.
If the numbers are outer diameter, then the inner diameter must be about two-thirds for these large arbor reels, or about 2.5 inches? They call this the ultimate big game reel, so I have no idea how...
Here are the listings from the Orvis catalog . . . if the diameter spec is without line, then the 4" diameter is appropriate.

VO2 III Reel: For line weights 4-7. 6 3/8 oz., 3 11/16" diameter...
From the Orvis catalog, the smallest of the VO2 reels has a diameter of 3 11/16".
But, to be fair, their statement is that "A permit in full run can spin a reel at 16,000 rpm . . .", which, as...
Interesting.
Let's see . . . each revolution of the reel will put out a length of line equal to approximately 3.14 times the diameter of the reel (with line).
Because there are 12 inches in a...
Hi all,
I'll be in New Orleans on business toward the end of March, and will have a Sunday free. Does anyone have recommendations for guided fishing at that time? I've found a few guides online...
I'd like to encourage everyone to learn a little more about the 'jerk-strip' retrieve method with full sink lines. It has completely changed the way I view sinking lines and their use. When using...
Check out this article for a method that uses full sink line, but presents the fly only a foot or so below the water.
