Have you considered longer rod and shorter line?
18ft-20ft rod with 11ft line will give more control around weeds.

I have fished with Trout Spey rods exclusively for about 5-6 years.

Advantages = better line control when drifting wet...

Texfly,
The Spey (Two Handed) rods do not follow the AFTMA line weight standards for single handed rods.
Here is a chart with the AFFTA 2004/2005 Spey line weights...
I use the Wulff Ambush line on my 11ft 4wt and 11'9" 4wt two handed rods.
It is not really a Triangle Taper but more of a level Skagit type line that works well with 10ft sinking leaders.

I have Sage 7wt XP's in 790-4 XP and 7100-4 XP, both are my favorites for larger river smallmouth fishing.
The 10ft is for dead drifting weighted flys and the 9ft for longer distances with top...
One factor everyone is forgetting on the Sharkskin lines.

I have one in 5wt and it is fine, the noise is...
I also have both the Traveler and Masters Renzetti. If you consider the amount of time in hours using the Masters the cost is less per hour than your rods/reels.
If you can afford the Masters, it...
I also recommend Tim Holschlag's book. I have the newest book and his earlier publication, both are first class for Smallmouth fly fishing.

My solution is Two Handed rods, 11ft for 10wt and 12wt, they are relaxing to cast all day with large heavy flies.

The Albright knot has been used for line/leader connection for many years and has landed many tens of thousands of saltwater fish with fly rod.

Interesting thread, so many FF are buying into the overlining concept. The rods are designed to cast in fishing conditions, not parking lots. The 70ft cast on a lawn or the rodmakers driveway will...

My understanding of the Abel vise is that it is a copy of the Renzetti.
The story is that Steve Abel requested a license to copy the Renzetti Masters and Andy Renzetti politely refused.
...
I visited the FF show at Marlboro, MA one Saturday,,,,three Abel vises in use.
Note: I also have the Renzetti Master vise as my favorite.

I just checked out the Abel site.
My interpretation is the Abel vise in brass & copper @ $795 is discontinued.
The Abel Aluminum / Stainless vise is available at the new price of $349 (was...
