Agree with John. Haven't used shot for many years. I used to use lead putty, when it was legal, now I use tungsten. Can use any amount and place it where I want. A bit pricey, but it is reusable.
A little pricey at $50, but Orvis sells glasses with 4X or 5X magnification. I have a pair of 5X for midges. They are more comfortable to wear in long tying sessions than the visor style, and they...

I have very little experience on the ponds, and none at the lakes. Ask around at Lopstick, and ask your guide. I do know you will need some kind of watercraft for the pond fishing, and I wouldn't...
Use the guide service at Lopstick. The river is fairly easy to read, so you will probably only need them for a day. Fish are stocked regularly, and the fishing, generally, is not too technical....
To each his own.
I don't like the shine. I think glare would be a problem. Also, what in that picture makes you suspect that it would hold a wider range of hook sizes? IMO, there are a number of vises on the market...
Two words: Griffith's Gnat
Universal Vise Co. In Westfield, MA had rotary vises in the fifties. Don't know when they were introduced, likely shortly after WW II. They had the Model ! which was full featured, and the simpler...
Tail looks like moose body hair to me. Wing appears to be Hi-Viz, or something similar. Nice tie, what size hook?
Testing: It would take some pretty sophisticated equipment and a scientific protocol to insure accurate results. I may be mistaken, but I don't think anyone who posted on this thread has the...
Epoxy substitute. A commercial tyer tipped me off to a product called "Allene's Fabric Fusion". It requires no mixing, dries clear, and is thicker than epoxy, so less care is required to keep it in...
First of all. I don't choose a leader tippet by strength, but rather by diameter. The diameter would be selected by a few factors, first being the size of the fly, second, the clarity of the water,...
Haven't purchased a fly in many years. Had some interesting patterns given to me by other tyers as examples, and I've given a few toothers, as well.
I use tungsten putty. Much more versatile than split shot. Can use any amount, shape it the way you want, and place it where you need it on the leader. I generally place it just above the tippet knot...
Bear in mind that once you add a prop to a fly pattern, you now have a lure, rather than a fly, by most states definitions. Nothing wrong with that, but you won't be able to use them in FFO areas.
I used a Dan Vise for several years. Only two complaints, both regarding small flies. As one poster mentioned, it does not hold real well with hooks smaller than #24, and do to the large size of the...
Second the slip strike suggestion. Also consider a rod with a "softer" tip. You will be doing yourself a big favor if you work on your technique rather than rely on gadgets.
What I would do: Rib the body with fine gold wire. Brush some super glue on the shank just before winding the body. Brush some Sally Hansen's on the body after wrapping and ribbing.
One poster...
Given the number of lost and broken rod and reel reports I see and hear each year, I'm amazed no one posted the following:
Form the following habits. When arriving at the stream, get fully dressed...
No. Only in 7/8, expensive niche product. Might be of interest to collectors, as they likely won't sell many, and could have value as a curiosity 50 years down the road,;-)
If you change flies, (both patterns & sizes), as often as I do, you want your tippet spools real handy. I have had no problem carrying spools outside my vest, but a tippet spool usually only lasts...
Simple answer - NO
I use a variety of lines, Cortland 333 & 444, Orvis, Sci Anglers, & H&H, and they all float. I clean and dress them regularly, and use a Zap - a - Gap connection which seals the end.
